ABSTRACT
Chicken production is one of the most widespread food industries in Bangladesh. Antibiotics use in chicken rearing has increased in our country mostly to prevents the layers and boilers from various diseases. The continued use of antibiotics in chicken production results its residues in products such as eggs and meats that pose a threat to human health. The purpose of the study was to determine the use pattern of antibiotic in chicken rearing in southwest region of Bangladesh. Data were collected from ninety (90) respondents involved in chicken farming practices covering three upazilas under three different districts using an interview schedule. Socio-economic study of the chicken farmers revealed that the majority of the respondents (48.9%) belonged middle aged and having 54.4% were small family, 26.7% old aged and having 40% medium family and 24.4% younger aged. The maximum percentage (54.4%) of the respondents was secondary followed by graduate and above (15.6%), higher secondary (12.2%), primary (11.1%), illiterate (4.4%) and (2.2%) can sign up only. About three-fourth of the respondents (74.4%) had no organizational participation and 41.1% respondents had training on chicken farming. The study stated that 86.7% of the farmers had medium knowledge on chicken rearing where only 10% high and 3.3% low knowledge. About 88.9% respondents had moderately positive attitude on chicken farming and 85.6% respondents had moderalely negative attitude on chicken farming. About 98.9% of the respondents vaccinated their birds and 74.4% of the respondents called doctor for treatments their birds. Among the respondents 92.2% used of vitamins and minerals supplementation and 32.2% respondents kept records regularly and 83.3% cases male was the caretaker of their farms. About 41.1% respondents very rarely visited upazila livestock offices. The study revealed that majority (92.2%) of the respondents said chicken farming is high prospective in southwest region of Bangladesh and 70.0% respondents stated chicken farming as medium poverty reduction activities. About 91.1% of the respondents had positive reaction to increases their income from chicken farming and 93.3% farmers faced moderate problems during chicken rearing. They stated that 78.9% of the respondents had used antibiotics and among them 82.2% fed antibiotics to their birds through water. About 94.4% of the respondents had moderately aware about the effect of antibiotics used in chicken production on human health and (5.6%) of the respondents had highly aware. Nobody found that had not aware on the effect on antibiotics used in chicken feed on human health. About 72.2% respondents said that the adverse effect of applying antibiotics in chicken rearing and 87.8% didn’t know the negative impacts of using antibiotics. About 51.1% respondents kept antibiotics at veterinary store and 51.1% local doctor, 37.8% used for treatment and 58.9% used treatment prophylaxis. About 65% respondents had not maintained the rules and regulation of antibiotics used and 100% of the respondents used fridge for storage of drug. It can be concluded that most of the chicken farmers are known to some extent the impacts of using antibiotics in chicken production on human health. However, most chicken farmers in the study area used antibiotics in chicken production to prevent disease and keep farms safe.| Details | |||
